Cyclo partnered with RSPCA NSW to design and deliver a new Equine Adoption Centre at the Hunter Shelter in Rutherford – a purpose-built facility that replaces improvised horse yards with a cohesive welfare-focused campus. Opened in November 2025, the centre is a major addition to the shelter and is designed to transform how horses are cared for, rehabilitated and rehomed across the state.
The project is organised around two custom stable blocks, a network of 13 paddocks and clear circulation routes. The main barn includes four stables with integrated veterinary examination areas, wash bay, horse crush and scales, allowing most handling and treatment to occur in a controlled environment. A dedicated intake block provides a secure area for unhandled or unwell horses, while surrounding paddocks are designed for two horses each and allow them to see other horses so they’re not isolated.
According to Kasey Bridge, Senior Manager of Intake, Capacity, and Emergency Response at RSPCA NSW, “Our Hunter Shelter has rehomed more than 60 horses in the last four years, but some of the horses still in our care have been with us for over 1,200 days.”
“With our staff now equipped with not only improved horse handling knowledge, but also the purpose-built facilities at the Equine Adoption Centre, we’ll be able to support these wonderful animals like never before.”
The completed centre increases the number of horses that can be managed on site and reduces reliance on external agistment. It improves safety and workflow for staff and volunteers by separating public, operational and animal movement zones, and it provides a clear, professional setting for adoption that supports RSPCA NSW’s ongoing welfare and rehoming work.
