Reimagining an existing space
Giraffe Early Learning Centre in Allambie Heights involved the transformation of an existing golf club into a contemporary early learning environment. The project required a considered approach to planning and construction, balancing the opportunities of the existing building with the functional, spatial and regulatory requirements of a modern childcare facility.
Navigating complex site conditions
The redevelopment included extensive excavation to establish a generous outdoor play area, alongside complex asbestos removal works. Careful management of these site conditions was essential to delivering a safe, compliant environment that met current Building Code of Australia (BCA) requirements and Department of Education standards.
A balance of openness and intimacy
The completed centre is defined by a thoughtful balance of expansive, light-filled spaces and smaller, more intimate retreats. Open areas provide room for movement, exploration and group activities, while quieter nooks offer opportunities for rest, reflection and independent play. This considered spatial arrangement creates a varied environment that responds to the different ways children learn, interact and engage with their surroundings.
A cohesive material palette
A restrained palette of colours, natural materials and carefully considered finishes brings cohesion to the interior, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere throughout. Natural light and a connection between indoor and outdoor spaces further enhance the sense of openness, resulting in an environment that is both functional and engaging, with the needs of children and educators informing every aspect of the design.
