Nexus Emergency Vet is a 24/7 emergency care hospital in Adelaide with a unique open-plan design. Rather than separating pets from their owners during treatment, Nexus invites families to stay close, moving bedside and cage-side through the care journey. The approach is designed to reduce stress for animals, give owners greater visibility, and create a more transparent emergency care experience.

Cyclo was engaged to design and deliver an emergency veterinary hospital that could support this new model in a practical, efficient and commercially viable way.

The challenge was to create an open, connected clinical environment within an existing building that had a distinctive shape and high raked ceilings. The client had a clear vision for how the hospital should operate, with a strong focus on flow, visibility and making every area feel considered, functional and purposeful.

Cyclo’s response was to turn the building’s unusual form into a strength. The design created a circular flow through the hospital, allowing families to move with their pet from triage to treatment, waiting, pharmacy and discharge. The layout includes consult rooms, triage, reception, a family room, treatment space, pharmacy, lab, grieving room, ICU, surgery and imaging provision.

The interior balances warmth and durability, with earthy tones, sage greens, terracotta accents and carefully selected finishes that feel contemporary, calm and suited to daily clinical use.

The outcome is one of South Australia’s first open-concept emergency vet hospitals. Nexus has received strong feedback from clients and local vets, with referrals helping support the new business. For the Nexus team, the hospital is not only beautiful and unique, but a space that reflects how they believe emergency care should feel: open, compassionate and centred around pets and their families.
