This new Tuggerah mental health centre brings privacy, safety and patient comfort together in a warm, welcoming environment designed around the particular needs of mental healthcare.
Early involvement insight
Cyclo was engaged as a building advisor before the client committed to a site, helping assess potential locations and identify issues or red flags. Once the Tuggerah site was selected, the project moved into a fully integrated process from design through to building.
A calming environment
The client sought a modern environment that would still feel familiar, calm and homely. Our approach combined walnut timber-look finishes, earthy greens, olives and warm neutral tones with residential-style lighting and tactile finishes to create a softer and more welcoming patient experience.
Acoustics and privacy
Confidentiality was a major consideration in the design, particularly given the centre’s high ceilings. Consult and meeting rooms were acoustically treated, with carpet and acoustic wall panelling working to reduce sound transfer and keep sensitive conversations private.
Patient and staff safety
Our layout separates client circulation from staff areas while maintaining practical access to consult rooms. Desks position staff closer to exits, while a dedicated escape room behind reception provides a safe retreat in an emergency.
A responsible approach
Recognising that the site’s existing fitout was only around a year old, we retained and repurposed as much as practical. Existing plumbing and services informed the new layout, while an existing column became both a design feature and a practical route for reception power.
Sensitive site operations
The centre sits beside an operating MRI facility, placing strict restrictions on construction timing and vibration. We scheduled works around these requirements, including after-hours activity where necessary, to ensure our construction did not interfere with the neighbouring equipment.
